Today I'm going to write down the final part of journal review that I've been reviewed throughout the whole semester. Today's topic is the results of that said journal, but before going to the results I'm going to remind you about the topic of the journal. The journal is about the interference of mother tongue in one's ability to produce speech in English, with that being said the journal is revolved around the observation of several students from 2 schools in rural area, the main point of this journal is to observe the usage of mother tongue and second language (English) of the students in producing speech and they preferred language as well as the reasons behind their choice.
First of all, the observation is done through a direct interview with each students, the results vary from one to another and it should be noted that most of the students find it difficult to produce speech in English directly, thus they use their mother tongue instead before translating it into English. However, some students choose to use English instead of their mother tongue despite some error in their speech, the reasons vary from the importance of English (hence they choose to learn and use it) to personal goals.
One important finding from this observation is that most students rely on the translation method from their mother tongue to comprehend their English speech. It is also denoted that the momos difficult study of English is speaking, specifically producing speech.

Journal Review: Comparison of 2 Journals
Greeting, fellas.
Today in a series of journal review I'd like to write something a bit different from my previous posts. Today's topic will be revolved around 2 journal in similar subject and comparison between them in term of method used. The first journal is The Interference of Mother Tongue/Native Language in One’s English Language Speech Production (Suliman A. 2014) and the second journal is Impact of Mother Tongue on Learning English Language on Secondary School Level Students (2017). As the names imply, both journal use a similar topic, which is the existence of mother language while learning another language, specifically English.
Methodology
While both journals elaborate similar topic, it is obvious that the authors of both journal use different method in their observation. The first journal for instance, use a qualitative method to determine the result of the observation, whereas the second journal use quantitative method, specifically Chi-Square to gather the data.
Furthermore, the first journal used an interview to gather the information needed from sample subject, and the author used some kind of personal approach with the sample, the method used is similar to a conversation rather than a question and answer session. On the other hand, the second journal differentiate the sample based on several aspect, such as marks of English, and then write it down in a metric and Chi-Square, followed by an analysis, thus the result is gathered.
It should be noted that, even though both authors used similar topic for their journal, the number of sample used is different, hence the method and approach used is different as the current method that both authors use is better than the latter and vice versa.

Today's topic from my series of journal review will revolve around response from interview-method which was being used by the author of the journal.

Response from Interview Session
From the interview session, it was revealed that the hardest part of English language is speaking or producing speech. Some reasons that are revealed in this interview, according to those students are: "I often mispronounce words and not confident in speaking", "Speaking is difficult because I do not know many words", "I am not used to speaking in English" and "Because it is hard and difficult to identify which word should be used". When those students were asked on what problem they face in speaking English, the answer they gave were: "To translate from Bahasa Melayu to English", "Less on vocab and don't know to describe something", "I not good in looking words in English. This makes me difficult to speak in English", "I not know things in English", "Hard to pronounce the difficult words and cannot speak well" and "Arranging words when speaking English".
Towards the end of the interview, those students were asked on which language is more important between English and Melayu. 8 out of 16 students said that English is more important, and when those students who said English is more important were asked what is their preferred language, only 2 out of 8 prefer English, their reasons were "English is the worldwide that is used nowadays" and "English always be used when we go out from our own country and also important in Science subject".
During the interview, it was noted that the students had difficulties in giving their responses in English. Most of them responded in Bahasa Melayu before translating their responses in English. It was also noted that most of them gave short response. This might be due to the incompetency they have in English language, apart from being uncomfortable giving response in English language.

The Interference of Mother Tongue - Part 2
Greeting, fellas.
Today I will continue my review on an international journal I've chose earlier, this will be the second part from this journal review. In this part, I'd like to write down the method that has been used by the author of the journal, it is not a mathematical method and does not involve counting or number, rather an information-based research using interview and question-answer method. Before jumping off to the methodology, I write a definition of mother language from the original journal.

Methodology
The design of language study is qualitative in nature. Qualitative research does not involve counting and dealing with numbers, but it is based on information expressed in words - descriptions, accounts, opinions, feelings, etc (Williman, 2006). This study purposive sampling, where the researcher deliberately select subjects who belong to specific group (Holmes, Dahan & Ashari, 2008).
The author of this journal has used 16 forms and involved 4 student which belong from 2 rural area's secondary school, whom English is considered as their third language. The study employs observation on students' speech production, which was delivered in three minutes and it will function as the secondary data, supporting the information obtained from the observation. The questions were based on the research questions derived earlier. The responses from the interview would support the findings from observation.

The Interference of Mother Tongue - Part 1

It's kinda
unexpected for me to write another post in this blog, but I'd like to
continue my blog progression (especially for college tasks) by adding
more reviews and probably some other contents to this blog.
As for today, I'll
write down a review or to be exact, personal view and reasons why I
chose this particular journal regarding English education field. This
is the first task about journal review in my class and I've found one
interesting journal about English learner. It's not about how English
learner use their knowledge of English in producing language, rather
it's about how innate aspect of English learner affects their
language production, especially speech production.

Reason:
One of the reason
why I decided to learn about this journal is, in Indonesia, most
English learner tend to force themselves to produce English language
just like a native English speaker produce the language, while in
fact there are some aspects that interfere with language production
of non-native English speaker. Even for native English speaker, there
are dialects and accents which affect the way their produce language,
which means one's ability to produce language is different with
other's.
In short, some
aspects such as dialects, accents and mother tongue also affects
one's ability to produce language, that's why native and non-native
English speaker have differences in the way they produce language.
Sometime, these aspects interfere with language production
(especially if English is not their first language) because their
mother tongue didn't have the same way to produce one speech sound,
et cetera. Although modern English allows us to speak freely without
worrying about pronunciation, it's always good to learn how to
produce the correct speech sound and such, but, don't sweat it.
This journal seems
to study innate aspects such as mother tongue interference in speech
production of non-native English speaker, giving us insight about how
each languages have its own uniqueness which affects another
languages production (in this case, English language). The study
happened in Malaysia which use Melayu as their first language and
English as their second language. The data have been collected from 2
rural areas in Sarawak.
Introduction (from
the journal):
Malaysian students
are made up of many ethnic groups, and the three biggest are the
Malays, Chinese and Indians (Manan & Shamsudin, 2012). Due to its
diversity of cultures, Malaysia owns variety of languages used and
spoken in daily communication. Since each ethnicity has their own
mother tongue or native language, there is a need for one language to
be the medium of communication, which could ease the interaction
among the society members. Post-independence Malaysia saw a need to
develop Bahasa Melayu as the national language as it was the language
of the largest ethnic group and also the language of unity among the
diverse races (Chan & Abdullah, 2007). Thus, Bahasa Melayu is the
national language of the country while English becomes the second
language in Malaysia. And it is essential to note that language is
critical for cognitive development because it provides a way to
express ideas and ask questions, the categories and concepts for
thinking, and the links between the past and the future (Woolfolk,
2010).
